Finishing Touches for your Victorian living room

Posted on June 12, 2015 at 7:58 pm

If you are fortunate enough to live in a beautiful Victorian terraced house you may wish to decorate your home in a style which is in keeping with its age. It can be relatively easy finding accessories and furnishings which will add the final finishing touch to your living room or lounge.

If you are not short of space, chunky, heavy iron radiators look amazing in a room with high ceilings and decorative plaster coving and an ornate ceiling rose. Use heavy patterned fabrics to drape your casement windows. Victorian windows often had a pelmet along the top which is covered in the same fabric as the curtains. Victorians were keen on fringes and elaborate ties to hold back the curtains during the day. Scout around second hand and antique shops for small pieces of furniture like a Victorian writing desk, occasional chairs or standard lamps. Look out also for a large, gilt edged mirror which may be suitable for hanging over a mantelpiece. Finally, make sure you have pictures and photo frames on the walls and elaborate china ornaments on the sideboard or on shelves in the alcoves to the side of the fireplace.
