It can be difficult deciding on the best type of flooring for a room as there are so many options available to the householder these days. For kitchens and bathrooms, where there is a lot of moisture present in the air, ceramic floor tiles are often a good choice.
Glazed tiles are water resistant and stain resistant making them easy to wipe clean. They are also tough and surprisingly hard-wearing and may last for as long as 15 years or more. If one tile does suffer a heavy impact and becomes damaged, then it is usually a relatively simple procedure to replace the single tile. Although floor tiles are not cheap, they are less expensive than hardwood flooring. For asthma sufferers, tiles are a good choice as the hard, solid surface is unable to absorb dust, pollen and other allergens.
However, ceramic tiles are hard and cold underfoot and some people find it uncomfortable standing for any length of time on a floor like this. Although a rug or mat can be placed in areas where people may stand for a long time; for instance, in front of the sink, this may spoil the look of the flooring and may become a trip hazard. Unless you are very skilled at DIY, you will probably need to pay an expert handyman to lay floor tiles, as it is not an easy job for the amateur and you will need to invest in proper cutting equipment. Tiles are also quite heavy and they may be unsuitable for a room which is not situated on the ground floor so do make sure you check floor joists are capable of taking a heavy load first.
