Children’s Bedrooms
Does your child’s bedroom need a makeover?
Over the years, as our children grow, the décor in their bedroom may not be suitable any more and does not reflect their interests. Young children enjoy having their bedrooms decorated with the latest cartoon characters that they watch on the television or they may have a particular interest in dinosaurs or pirates and princesses and want their bedroom to have images of these characters on the walls. As they get older many children become interested in computer games and so may want their room to have a theme that reflects this. Decorating a youngster’s bedroom then is going to be a regular thing every few years or so.
If your child’s bedroom does need a makeover it may be a good idea to decorate it in neutral colours and shades and then have pictures on the wall that can be replaced as the characters come in and out of favour. This is a much more cost effective way of keeping the bedroom up to date instead of having to decorate the whole room every time. It is also beneficial if the children in the family want to swap bedrooms every now and then perhaps because one bedroom is smaller than the other. In this way it is easy to change the theme of the bedroom by simply changing the pictures and perhaps the bedding.
The process of giving a bedroom a makeover can be tricky as it is unlikely to be completed overnight
and so alternative sleeping arrangements will need to be made. All the bedroom furniture will need to be removed from the room to make the decorating easier which may involve taking apart beds. This however is a good opportunity to inspect the bedframe to see if it needs retightening or repairing and to check that the mattress is okay or whether it needs replacing. Once all the furniture is out of the room the flooring can be replaced if necessary. Carpets in a child’s bedroom can get stained so laminate flooring with rugs for cosiness may be a better option.
When choosing wall paint it is sensible to get hardwearing paint that can be wiped down if necessary especially if it is a young child’s room as drawing on the walls is quite a common occurrence. Low odour paint is best to use as it is much easier to apply and does not leave a chemical smell in the room after painting.
Once the paint is dry, the furniture returned to the room and wall art hung in place the only thing left is to enjoy your child’s reaction as they walk into their new bedroom.
