Stairway to the Attic

Posted on August 6, 2015 at 8:07 pm

For many householders, who are not looking to move to a bigger house, but who require more space at home, an ideal solution may be to extend into the loft space. For a modest extension, planning permission is no longer required but you will have to make sure that you follow current building regulations.

One of the difficulties in creating space under the roof concerns the stair way. If you are creating a habitable room upstairs then a loft ladder or retractable stairs will not be deemed suitable. But to continue the stairs from your ground floor can take up much needed space and may generate the need to then construct a dormer window in the loft.

There are several types of space saving stairs available to the householder. A spiral staircase constructed of wood or metal may be the answer. A joinery firm or a competent carpenter can easily make spiral stairs and there are companies online which manufacture metal staircases to order. Overlapping paddle stairs are another solution. There is a knack to using these but they soon become easy to negotiate with practice!

Ideas for storage in a small home

Posted on July 28, 2015 at 10:28 am

If space is very limited in your home, then it is important to think carefully about storage as you will not want your home looking cluttered and untidy with no space to move. It may be wise to invest in some multi-functional furniture, like folding dining tables, coffee tables with storage underneath and beds with hidden drawers in the base. But how else could you be creative with storage?

Shelving is obviously essential for storing books, children’s toys and kitchen equipment. However, it needn’t look boring. Shelving can be stylish and add interest to a tall, bare wall. Consider square or hexagonal shaped boxes on the wall of a child’s room to store toys. A net strung above a bed or in the corner of a room can be a great place to keep the endless cuddly toys that children seem to acquire these days.

Make use of the space on the landing and stairs for book shelves. You could have a shelf running around the walls of the landing, above the height of the doors for paperbacks. Put narrow shelving on the wall facing you as you walk down the stairs and store things which you want to keep but do not use much, if at all, like photo frames or holiday souvenirs.

You may be able to store toiletries and spare toilet rolls under your timber bath surround. Make a little door at one end for easy access. In a kitchen, use a ceiling rack which can be lowered by a rope or pulley system, to hang pots and pans and large kitchen utensils. You can buy butchers’ hooks in most good cookware shops or hardware stores.

Finishing Touches for your Victorian living room

Posted on June 12, 2015 at 7:58 pm

If you are fortunate enough to live in a beautiful Victorian terraced house you may wish to decorate your home in a style which is in keeping with its age. It can be relatively easy finding accessories and furnishings which will add the final finishing touch to your living room or lounge.

If you are not short of space, chunky, heavy iron radiators look amazing in a room with high ceilings and decorative plaster coving and an ornate ceiling rose. Use heavy patterned fabrics to drape your casement windows. Victorian windows often had a pelmet along the top which is covered in the same fabric as the curtains. Victorians were keen on fringes and elaborate ties to hold back the curtains during the day. Scout around second hand and antique shops for small pieces of furniture like a Victorian writing desk, occasional chairs or standard lamps. Look out also for a large, gilt edged mirror which may be suitable for hanging over a mantelpiece. Finally, make sure you have pictures and photo frames on the walls and elaborate china ornaments on the sideboard or on shelves in the alcoves to the side of the fireplace.
